How to find a business broker

What to ask before you hire.

Ask about the engagement, not the slogan

A useful first meeting covers what is being sold, who may be told, how buyers are approached, and how the fee works. A firm that will not discuss the fee is not more professional. It is less clear.

You can also sell without a broker. Many people ask how to sell without one. That is a real option if you can run confidentiality and diligence yourself.

Fit is industry and process

A broker who knows your kind of buyer is more useful than a slogan about closed deals.

Start with a preliminary range if you want a number before you hire anyone. You do not owe a listing because you looked.

Questions

Do I have to hire a broker to look at a range?

No. The range is a starting conversation. Hiring a broker is a separate choice.

Should I interview more than one?

Yes, if you plan to hire. Compare the scope and the fee, not a slogan.
